OPERATION
SMILE NIGHT
VETERAN
REPORTER
TO
DO SHOW-AND-TELL
AT
ST. AIDAN’S
ABOUT
OPERATION
SMILE VIETNAM
MISSIONS
Friday,
February 5th,
2010.
Former
WTKR reporter
Bruce Barry
will talk about
his recent return
to Vietnam
at St. Aidan’s
Episcopal
Church, 3201 Edinburgh
Dr. at 6:30 p.m.
on Friday, February
5th, 2010.
The
November 2009
Operation Smile
mission to 16
sites, involving
more than a thousand
volunteer health
care professionals,
performed 868
life-changing
surgeries and
more than 66-hundred
dental treatments.
The mission marked
the 20th Anniversary
of Operation
Smile’s
first mission
to Vietnam, in
1989.
Bruce
(Barry Higginbotham,
as his fellow
St. Aidan’s
parishioners know
him) covered that
first mission
as a reporter
for WTKR-TV 3
News in Norfolk.
Bruce’s
third OpSmile
mission was extra
special, because
his then 18-year-old
daughter, Dru,
was also on the
mission. She had
established the
first Operation
Smile “Happy
Club” as
a senior at First
Colonial High
School.
So,
imagine how
special
it was to go
back with a
special
video team
in
November to
document
the twentieth
anniversary,
which again
included
his daughter
Dru, this time
as a speech
pathologist
and member
of
the medical
team
at the surgical
site in Can
Tho.
Those
are just a
few
of the highlights
Bruce will
present,
using video
from
his coverage
of the first
mission
twenty years
ago, along
with
video shot
during
the twentieth
anniversary
mission.
Operation
Smile Vice President
Lisa Jardanhazy
will accompany
Bruce (“to
keep my facts
straight, and”)
to answer any
questions. Donation
brochures will
be available for
those who desire
them.
About Parish Life
Parish Life is the heart of St. Aidan's. The members of the Commission are responsible for the coordination of events throughout the year. Parishioners especially like to come together for receptions, potluck suppers, picnics and catered dinners. Also, we sponsor fairs, workshops, silent auctions, retreats and monthly Saturday night socials.
More specifically, our parish has a rich history of gathering for social events which take many forms in addition to those noted above. We enjoy a yearly congregational dinner; fish fries and barbeque luncheons provided by the Men’s Group on the church grounds; Meet and Greet fellowship on Sunday mornings in the parish hall; and our yearly fund raising event, The Fall Fair. Young people are involved in many of these activities such as preparing Super Bowl sandwiches as a fund raiser; family Advent wreath making; the Christmas pageant; the Maundy Thursday pancake supper; Lenten dinners and the Easter Egg Hunt.
Because of our active parish life, St. Aidan’s is more than a church; it is a family.
Speaking of joining in, Don Ritter is organizing a “planning group” for future St. Aidan’s Social activities. If you have an interest in taking part in creating, organizing, or simply being a part of the process, please let Don know @ 427-7575 or drritter@cox.net.
